Catalogue Foreword

Shattering States, the theme selected for this year’s Ateneo Art Awards, perfectly conveys the museum’s vanguard effort in championing the cause of modernism in the Philippines for the past half century.

Fernando Zobel’s bequest of his collection of works by the emerging artists of his generation was clearly an act of defiance that pushed boundaries and broke new ground. Today, that spirit remains alive through the Awards as it traverses the range and scale of art practice today, underscoring the transgressions being carried out by artists rather that being an evocation of stasis or permanence. Ceaselessly challenging traditional media forms, this year’s shortlist presents an explosive gamut of artists whose works in one way or another delineate and define the cutting edge.

Beyond the parameters of the object and its creator, Shattering States is also an ongoing reflection about place: a mapping of links that connect local and global concerns, revitalised by the promise of change, art ultimately shows us how powerful the real and imagine commingle in our shared wishing space.
