Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ, announced on April 8, 2015 the appointment of Ma. Victoria “Boots” Herrera as Director of the Ateneo Art Gallery.
Ms. Herrera joins the Ateneo de Manila University after having worked in the public sector for 26 years. She ends her post as the Director of the CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division, Production and Exhibition Department and assistant professor at the University of the Philippines – Diliman, Department of Art Studies this summer. She has been involved with the Ateneo as a lecturer in the Arts Management program since 2005 and was curator for the Ateneo Art Gallery’s landmark exhibitions Lee Aguinaldo: In Retrospect and Windows To Conversations: Roberto Chabet, Lee Aguinaldo, Fernando Zobel.
Until her posting at the CCP, Boots engaged in freelance curatorial and museum-related projects. Among her projects were research and exhibitions on Italian sculptor Francesco Riccardo Monti, painter/educator Florencio Concepcion, abstractionist Lee Aguinaldo, and conceptual artist Roberto Chabet. She co-authored the book The Life and Art of Lee Aguinaldo (2011) that won the Alfonso T Ongpin Best Book on Art in the National Book Development Award (2012).
In 2000, Boots received a grant from the Asian Scholarship Foundation to conduct research on museums and training programs in Malaysia and Singapore. In 2004, she received a fellowship from the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne.
She is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
In his announcement to the university community, Fr. Villarin said “Boots joins us during a dynamic period for the arts in the University as we prepare for the Areté, the creative hub of the University. I am confident that with her extensive experience as an educator, curator and museum administrator, Boots will enable us to realize our vision of creating a world-class museum”.
